These classes cater for children 5 years and above who are attending school. Through a system of progressive development the children learn basic skills on all the Olympic apparatus.
Classes involve a variety of fun and challenging activities which develop a wide range of physical attributes including strength, flexibility, balance and co-ordination.
This group has an encouragement award system known as Reach for the Stars that enables each gymnast to progress at their own pace and within their level of ability. At the end of each term they are evaluated on the skills that they have learned throughout the term and, upon successful completion they are awarded a certificate and badge. They then move to the next stage of the system.
Classes are 1 hour in duration and they have 1 session per week.
The class format is as follows:
1. Class warm up game
2. Class Stretch
3. Split class up into Planets for rotations on equipment (See below for group criteria!)
4. Class cool down
Reach for the Stars Awards
There are 10 planets in our Reach for the Stars Awards.
Each planet covers skills, drills and safety for gymnastics apparatus.
Each planet is a progression from the previous level.
Planets:
Pluto, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Earth, Venus, Mercury, Sun
Planet Pluto is the first step. All new gymnasts start here. The Sun is the hardest planet and is the last.
What does this mean for you??
When you join the class for the first time, you will start at Planet Pluto- this means you will be introduced to each piece of apparatus and taught the basic skills. The main focus is safety, a challenge and overall having just a little bit of fun!
Towards the end of term, you will be tested upon the skills you have learnt and then progress to the next planet when you start the following term. I.e. A gymnast on Planet Pluto will progress to Planet Neptune etc.)
Splitting of class into Group / Planets
In step 3, we split the class up. At the beginning of term, after the Class Stretch, we will call out each gymnast and their planet and assign them a coach for that term. They are asked to remember their planet and / or coach. (Of course, some gymnasts remember more than others!) For the rest of that term, they should be with the same group / coach as they are all on the same Planet.
Un-even Groups (Coach to Student ratios)
As much as we can, we keep the group numbers even, however, sometimes we will have 10 gymnasts in a Planet Pluto group and only 6 in a Planet Sun. The skills for Planet Sun mean that the gymnast has over 2 years worth of gymnastic experience, thus to put a first time (Planet Pluto) gymnast in this class would not be safe nor enjoyable.
Assessments:
Assessments will be held in week 8 & 9 of each term and badges and certificates given out the following week.
You will be tested on the following pieces of equipment (depending upon your Planet)
Bars, Beam, Floor, Parallel bars, Rings, Pommel, Trampoline, Vault
Scoring:
The grading scale for each skill is from 1-5:
1- Gymnast needs coach assistance
2- Gymnast needs more practice
3- Gymnast has satisfactory level of skill
4- Gymnast has good level of skill
5- Gymnast has excellent level of skill.
