Programs - Recreational Activities

Participants in all programs get the opportunity to participate in our End of Year Display where they have fun and get the opportunity to display their skills to their families and friends. The following activities are available: Kindergym, Junior Gym, Junior Recreation, Senior Recreation, Trampolining Program, Tricks, Tumbling Program, Rebound Therapy, Adult Gym.

Kindergym

Welcome to the wonderful world of Kindergym where we encourage your 18 month to 5 year old child to explore, create and discover their gymnastics and sporting talents.

At Kindergym our main focus is to encourage your child's motor, cognitive and socio-emotional growth, at a comfortable pace. An accompanying adult is mandatory and we encourage you to be as involved as possible.

There is a fun new theme each week and your child will have the opportunity to learn and practice gross motor skills – such as running, jumping, galloping, hopping, skipping and climbing. Whilst also developing their fine motor skills including hand-eye and hand-eye-foot coordination. They will learn swinging, spinning, rotations and many other gymnastic and sporting skills which will give them a fantastic start for whichever sport they choose to take up.

Come join in the Fun!

Classes are for 1 hour in duration.  (Extra siblings are charged an additional fee if over 18months old.)

NEW Class just added on Saturday mornings  - Great for Dads or working parents !!

Junior Gym

This is an introduction to gymnastics for pre-school aged children 4 - 5 years of age.  The program is structured to develop the basic skills of gymnastics in a fun and challenging manner while helping to develop gross motor skills and co-ordination.

Junior Gym differs from Kinder Gym in that the children are involved in a student group situation under the guidance of a coach. Mums and Dads are welcome to watch. In this group situation children develop their learning skills as well as physical strength, co-ordination and the ability to interact socially with other members of the group.

Classes are limited to 8 children per coach and are 45 minutes in duration.

Junior Recreation

These classes cater for children 5 years and above who are attending school. Through a system of progressive development the children learn basic skills on all the Olympic apparatus.

Classes involve a variety of fun and challenging activities which develop a wide range of physical attributes including strength, flexibility, balance and co-ordination.

This group has an encouragement award system known as Reach for the Stars that enables each gymnast to progress at their own pace and within their level of ability. At the end of each term they are evaluated on the skills that they have learned throughout the term and, upon successful completion they are awarded a certificate and badge. They then move to the next stage of the system.

Classes are 1 hour in duration and they have 1 session per week.

The class format is as follows:

1.            Class warm up game

2.            Class Stretch

3.            Split class up into Planets for rotations on equipment (See below for group criteria!)

4.            Class cool down

Reach for the Stars Awards

There are 10 planets in our Reach for the Stars Awards.

Each planet covers skills, drills and safety for gymnastics apparatus.

Each planet is a progression from the previous level.

Planets:

Pluto, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Earth, Venus, Mercury, Sun

Planet Pluto is the first step.  All new gymnasts start here. The Sun is the hardest planet and is the last.

What does this mean for you??

When you join the class for the first time, you will start at Planet Pluto- this means you will be introduced to each piece of apparatus and taught the basic skills.  The main focus is safety, a challenge and overall having just a little bit of fun!

Towards the end of term, you will be tested upon the skills you have learnt and then progress to the next planet when you start the following term.  I.e. A gymnast on Planet Pluto will progress to Planet Neptune etc.)

Splitting of class into Group / Planets

In step 3, we split the class up.  At the beginning of term, after the Class Stretch, we will call out each gymnast and their planet and assign them a coach for that term.  They are asked to remember their planet and / or coach. (Of course, some gymnasts remember more than others!) For the rest of that term, they should be with the same group / coach as they are all on the same Planet.

Un-even Groups (Coach to Student ratios)

As much as we can, we keep the group numbers even, however, sometimes we will have 10 gymnasts in a Planet Pluto group and only 6 in a Planet Sun.  The skills for Planet Sun mean that the gymnast has over 2 years worth of gymnastic experience, thus to put a first time (Planet Pluto) gymnast in this class would not be safe nor enjoyable.

Assessments:

Assessments will be held in week 8 & 9 of each term and badges and certificates given out the following week.

You will be tested on the following pieces of equipment (depending upon your Planet)

Bars, Beam, Floor, Parallel bars, Rings, Pommel, Trampoline, Vault

Scoring:

The grading scale for each skill is from 1-5:

1-            Gymnast needs coach assistance

2-            Gymnast needs more practice

3-            Gymnast has satisfactory level of skill

4-            Gymnast has good level of skill

5-            Gymnast has excellent level of skill.

Tricks

Tricking is the informal name of a relatively new underground alternative sport movement, combining gymnastics, breakdancing, martial arts and other activities to create an aesthetic blend of flips, kicks, and twists.

Tricking incorporates a variety of moves from different arts such as backflips from gymnastics, cheat 540 kick from Taekwondo, butterfly twist from Wushu and double leg from Capoeira. Tricking is recognizable by its flashy kicks, complex flips and twists, and its highly stylized movements which separate it from other arts. An individual who practices tricking is typically referred to as a "tricker" or "trickster".

Morgan and Jono have been studying tricking since 2003 and are now two of the top trickers in Australia and the most qualified for teaching this sport because of their broad knowledge and experience.

The classes cater for all skill levels from beginners to advanced. Each new student is taught from the ground up on the foundations of gymnastics acrobatics, martial arts, and tricking specific tricks. Each class is categorized in age groups from 8-13yo in the intermediate tricking class, 14-17yo in the senior tricking class, and 18+ in the adult tricking class. The learning progression that is taught is structured to suit all levels of talent and the range of equipment within the Manly Warringah Gymnastics Club facilities are used to assist the development of the student’s skills.

The personal achievement of gaining a new trick is always highly celebrated by the whole group because each student knows how challenging tricking can be.

Rebound Therapy

Rebound Therapy is a visionary new therapy technique for intellectually and physically handicapped children and adolescents.

"Rebound Therapy" is a registered trademark in Great Britain (www.reboundtherapy.org) foundered by E.G. Anderson, in 1969 and describes the use of trampolines in providing therapeutic exercise and recreation for people with a wide range of special needs.

The use of trampolines with the assistance of an instructor can bring about an exercise of internal organs and muscle groups in a student to assist fitness, movement and communication.

The exercise techniques used on a trampoline are known to use more muscle groups than Hydrotherapy or any other ground based physical activity.

Who can benefit from Rebound Therapy?

Participants range from mild to severe physical disabilities and from mild to profound and multiple learning disabilities, including dual sensory impairment and autistic spectrum.

The current Rebound Therapy Program caters for children and adolescents who are school aged (4 -18 years).

What are the benefits of Rebound Therapy?

Rebound therapy is used to:

- Facilitate movement
- Promote balance
- Promote and increase and decrease in muscle tone
- Promote relaxation
- Promote sensory integration
- Improve fitness and exercise tolerance
- Improve communication skills.
- Combat Obesity.

Bookings for this program are essential and potential gymnasts (children or adults) will require an assessment to ensure appropriate grouping.

Adult Gym

These classes cater for gymnasts from 17 years up and the difficulty is tailored to the individual's ability. You are never too old to have a try.

The first part of the session is spent on a warm-up including strength, flexibility and basics, then the gymnasts nominate their preferred activity for the rest of the time. Coaches are constantly working and trying to get the best from each participant so your are guaranteed to learn new skills and find muscles that you never thought you possessed.

So if you are an ex-gymnast or have never done gym but always wanted to be able to do a somersault or cartwheel or you simply want to get fit and have a six pack then come along and have a go.
